Daruma
Zen Buddhism was introduced to Japan during the Kamakura period (1192-1333) and was highly revered by the Kamakura shogunate.
In the Muromachi period (1338-1573), "Daruma dolls" (tumbler toys) appeared, and initially, there were many different designs of these toys.
By the Edo period (1603-1867), Daruma dolls shaped like Daruma meditating became the most popular and iconic. Later, every household would buy Daruma dolls as good luck charms, praying for business prosperity, abundant harvests, and protection from misfortune.
The Daruma doll was named "Daruma" after Bodhidharma, and later "Daruma" also became synonymous with the tumbler doll.
