Daruma
Zen Buddhism was introduced to Japan during the Kamakura period (1192-1333) and was highly revered by the Kamakura shogunate.
By the Muromachi period (1338-1573), "daruma" toys emerged, initially in various forms.
In the Edo period (1603-1867), the daruma doll in the likeness of Bodhidharma meditating became the most popular and iconic. Later, households would purchase daruma dolls as mascots to pray for business prosperity, bountiful harvests, and to ward off misfortune.
The daruma doll was named "Daruma" after Bodhidharma, and later "Daruma" also became synonymous with the roly-poly doll.
